WELCOME ESP, FEASIBILITY STUDY, and MARKETING MANAGEMENT STUDENTS - CKC

Welcome to Second Semester.

I look forward to an engaging semester of discussions, field works, researches, artistic outputs, blogging, emailing, and consultations. This might look a lot but everything is doable.  You're welcome to see me if you need help.

WELCOME MSE 545 STUDENTS - TEACHING CHILDREN WITH SEVERE AND MULTIPLE IMPAIRMENT - M.U.S.T.

Welcome to the class. This will be a semester studying teaching strategies and related topics for children with severe and multiple impairment. There'll be case studies, researches, discussions, blogging, and, the new little addition to the skill, the making of an online Personal Learning Environment (PLE).

I believe in your ability to learn.  So keep the spirit high and the interest always.

MARION

Marion is a tutorial system intended to address the Reading and Mathematics skills of school children from preschool to elementary  and, soon enough, high school levels. Right now, the setting of the physical environment and instructional materials are shaping up in a "laboratory classroom" which eventually will be the teacher training center.

I'm looking at the possibility of making this my dissertation study in 2014 - enough time to draw conclusion by then.

I commissioned my ten-year-old girl to do the design for Marion and she came up with the logo below in an hour. I paid her a "hefty" amount of money for a ten-year-old to show how she can make money out of her talent.

FSUU - SPED 504 LAST DAY - 10/8/2011

To study psychology of exceptional children is way too taxing for the brain if direct instruction is used. So I used Miniversity Strategy with chunking and graphic organizer techniques to which the students were given  free hand on how they present their topics creatively according to their understanding. Mix that with hilarious metaphors and break down of complex theories & research findings to a language familiar to them, then the task becomes easier and most of all.... FUN. That's all for now, class. See you next semester...

REST IN PEACE, CACHEL.....

To my cousin, Cachel, who passed away today (cervical cancer), may you rest in peace..... (she must have known it will be her last homecoming attendance, November, 2010, as she really did exert effort to be in her alma mater inspite of the illness. this picture was taken after the motorcade and the school was buzzing with hellos, laughter, and screaming  from old friends and classmates).

ASIAN CONFERENCE FOR ACADEMIC JOURNALS AND HIGHER ED RESEARCH

The Asian Research Conference was my first and sure enough, IT'S JUST THE BEGINNING of more attendance to conferences of the like in the future. I'd say my presentation was good enough yet I missed salient points which the veteran presenters (geez! they abound! they outnumbered neophytes like me.) covered in great detail to the point of them failing in time management but STILL, given the highest acknowledgment... the advantage of being a senior ( I will be in that predicament pretty soon... so I rest my case!).

If only there could be a way to make those presentations more engaging and "alive" as the plain, "oral reading" technique of presenters beat the heck out of me and induced rapid production of melatonin, the sleep agent in our body. Yet the compulsion to stay "prim and proper" helped out most of the audience to stay up and awake as everybody was required to wear formal outfit - commendable dress code, served as control of error.

The best thing that happened to me during the conference came from a  female Malaysian professor from  MARA University of Technology (Malaysia), Jane Aw Yang Huey, who presented her book review on "Economics Made Easy" by David H.S. Ng. She presented an excerpt of the 1994 Hudsucker Proxy movie, and left these words as a recap to her presentation, "It is the consumer taste that changes demand, not the price". Which I stated in another way as - show the value of a commodity and demand changes. That struck me and made me realize it's time to be back in business. I have been "dormant" in business for the longest time to "nanny" my kids. Now it's time..... the dragon is awake.

MY PHILAIR INT'L. CONFERENCE RESEARCH PAPER PRESENTATION

ABSTRACT

This study has provided a modified behavior management system in the framework of Positive Behavior Supports for the high school department.

Research questions were answered in the current behavior management system status, case referral status, the necessary corrections and modifications, and the modified behavior management design. The conceptual framework was anchored on the multiplicity principle of mixed research method. Eight survey instruments, interviews, and observations were employed to four administrators, twenty-six staff, twenty parents, and one hundred seventy five  students. Data were limited to the high school department only.

Results revealed that the existing Behavior Management System put more weight on the PBS goal of decreasing problem behavior in its current system and missed two equally important goals of a proactive system: prevention of problem behaviors and increase of positive social behaviors. However, it fared well having established a system that kept problem behaviors manageable but not without lapses. Support systems to establish the two other goals and refine the existing one to align with the PBS standards were designed while integrating the unique nuance of spirituality in all the three goals. Direction of further research was suggested.

(key words: PBS, School-wide Positive Behavior Supports, proactive system, discipline,  behavior management )

PEDAGOGY IN THE USE OF INTERNET SOURCES IN SEARCH FOR RESEARCH LITERATURE

I.    RESEARCH IN THE AGE OF TECHNOLOGY

Apparently, research in the digital age is breaking down barriers in terms of access to vast and latest updates on literatures and other related studies done in countries across the world. Technology, through the worldwide web network, creates cutting edge programs for researchers to come up with more comprehensive meta-inferences that enable scientific evidence-based decision making on the part of scientists, leaders, inventors, innovators, and strategists in the different fields of studies.

Collaborative initiatives of different entities involved in web technology like Google, Scopus, Sciverse, and Thomson Reuters (ISI), to mention  a few, paved the way to a more efficient basis of scientific literature and corresponding studies as its authenticity and reliability factors are guaranteed by the H index indicators of the authors. With this, researchers gain confidence in their writings knowing that the higher the H index received by the authors they cite in their respective studies, the higher probability their studies are in conformity with other scientific works done ahead of them or currently undertaken. The thing is, today’s research also demands sophistication in terms of skills from the researchers to access other scientific works in their respective fields so we need to keep abreast with high tech research tools. Otherwise, one would be left out groping in the cyber freeway.

As for DEM 612 session today, the above mentioned topic was discussed and explored in class. Dr. Japos introduced and guided the class through the whole process of research data gathering and authentication.

The following table illustrates actions to be taken in each task:

MY FIRST DAY IMPRESSION ON DEM 612 COURSE

I thought DEM 612 class would be relatively the same with the subjects I had last summer – few and loaded. It turned out more in student number but equal in the amount of course requirements.

There are three major areas that I would like to address in my first day impression, namely: content, approach, and professor.

My impression, however, is partial as I came in late and missed the first part of the orientation. Yet, I believe I was able to catch up for the most part of the required activities of the subject.

For the subject content, I find the amount of topics to be covered overwhelming yet doable. Yet I take it as a constant for people who are in the administration profession otherwise we stick to other line of work which has nothing to do with dealing people and conditions.

I should say the approach adapted is geared towards self-propelling knowledge acquision. As the word implicates, higher education means going beyond what is prescribed. Reading one book a month I should say is something out of the ordinary for a typical working class person. Yet as administrator, it is a necessity to be few steps ahead of everybody else and engaging with management systems of the world through reading books by experts in the field. The amount of learning then lies more in the industry of the student than the professor.

I like best the integration of technology in the approach employed by the professor.  As one who is also into such approach in teaching, I totally agree in the appropriateness of its use in the course.  Couple this with the possible benchmarking of real educational institutions outside of the Philippines, I believe this subject offers one of the best trainings for administrators.

No matter how good the content and approach are, they would be nothing if the professor factor is nil in wit, creative mind, total intelligence, and humor. Impressive is the ability of the professor of DEM 612 to hold captive in awe his students for a long period. His wit gives away a kind of person whose resiliency brings excellence wherever he is and regardless of adversities. I say, that is a true administrator and educator – intuitive, innovative, and most of all, intelligently funny. That’s the DEM 612 professor.

In closing, I pretty well know I will be acquiring rich experiences and leveled-up knowledge in this course.
